What is a cataract?

A cataract is when your eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. The lens is located near the front of the eye and focuses light on the retina. Proteins in your lens break down and cause things to look blurry, hazy or less colorful.
Cataracts are a very common cause of impaired vision.

Causes and Symptoms:

Cataracts can develop in children however, they are more common in adults over 40. The normal process of aging causes the lens to harden and turn cloudy.

Eye injuries, intense heat, chemical burns that damage the lens can cause early traumatic cataracts.
UV radiation can also cause early cataracts, it is important to wear proper sunglasses while enjoying the outdoors.

Certain infections or diseases such as diabetes can also cause the lens to cloud.

Detection and Treatment:

Vision will become more hazy, fuzzy and blurry, you may be more sensitive to lights. In some cases double vision may also occur.
Regular, routine eye exams will help to detect early signs of cataracts. Depending on the type of cataract and how far along the cataract has developed they will determine if further treatment or surgery is needed.

Some foods that can help to prevent cataracts:

Some research shows that eating foods high in antioxidants like vitamins C and E may help prevent cataracts. If you already have cataracts, it may slow their growth.

Examples: Citrus, tomatoes including tomato juice, red & green peppers, kiwi, strawberries, cantaloupe, brussel sprouts, broccoli and potatoes.
